I lost count of how many customers have told me, after their first detail with us, that they are not going back to drive-through washes. It always sounds like a sales line until you hear it ten or fifteen times from people you have never met.
Here is what is going on.
The biggest one is time. A drive-through wash is fast in the moment but a real wash is fifteen minutes plus the drive there and the line. Add a vacuum at the end and you are at an hour easy, sometimes more. Mobile detailing flips that. You do whatever you would do at home and your car is being detailed in your driveway. You did not lose the day.
The other thing, and this is the one I wish more people understood, is that the spinning brushes at automatic washes are absolutely murdering your paint. Those brushes pick up grit from every car that came before yours and drag it across your clear coat. The fine spider-web pattern of scratches you see on most cars after a few years? That is what causes it. We can polish a lot of that out but it would not be there in the first place if the car was hand washed properly. The two-bucket method we use means the dirt that comes off your car never goes back on it.
Then there is what a wash does not touch. The inside. They might run a vacuum and wipe the dash. That is not detailing. A real interior detail is steam cleaning the seats, hot-water extraction on the carpets, getting into the door jambs and the cup holders. It takes hours, not minutes. There is no version of a five-minute service that gets close.
Quality of products matters too. Drive-through washes use the cheapest soap they can run through a high-volume system. We use pH-neutral wash, dedicated wheel cleaners, microfibre everything. Different category of result.
And honestly, the last thing is just the relationship. The same person who detailed your car last time is probably going to do the next one. We remember if your dog rides in the back. We remember the leather conditioner you liked. That kind of thing matters more than people expect.
