Ceramic Coating vs. Wax: Which Actually Holds Up in BC?

I get this question constantly. Usually when I am wrapping up a detail and the customer is looking at how clean the car is and wondering how to keep it that way. Wax or ceramic.

The short version is that wax is fine if you like waxing your car. Ceramic coating is better if you do not want to think about it for a couple of years.

Here is what actually happens with wax in this climate. You apply it on a sunny day in June. By mid-August it is mostly gone. We get something like 1,500mm of rain a year on the south coast. That much water, even if it is just regular rain, is enough to wear through a coat of carnauba in two months. By the time you actually need protection in October and November, you have nothing on the paint.

Ceramic coating is a different thing entirely. It is a polymer that bonds to the clear coat. Once it cures it does not wash off. A real one applied properly lasts somewhere between two and five years depending on how you treat the car. We see customers come back for maintenance washes who had us do a coating two summers ago and the water still beads off the hood like the day we finished.

The catch is the price. A full ceramic from our Showroom package starts at $750 for a sedan and runs higher for SUVs and trucks. That is a real number. If you do the math, it works out to something like $200-300 a year over the lifespan of the coating, which is actually less than what most people spend on wax over the same period. But it is a bigger up-front bite.

I will not coat a car if it does not make sense for the owner. If you bought the car planning to flip it next year, save the money. If your truck is a daily worksite vehicle that gets beat up regardless, save the money. If your paint is already in rough shape with oxidation or deep scratches, we have to fix that first or the coating just locks the damage in.

Where ceramic actually pays back is on a car you plan to keep five years, that you park outside, and where you actually care how the paint looks. Most newer cars in Surrey and Langley fit that description.

The other thing nobody tells you about ceramic: washes get easier. Way easier. Bird droppings rinse off. Bug splatter wipes away. You spend less time on maintenance, not more. That alone is worth a lot to people who have been hand-washing for years.
